Donald Kennedy to deliver Clark Kerr Lectures
Donald Kennedy, former president of Stanford University, now editor of Science, will be the third Clark Kerr Lecturer on the Role of Higher Education in Society, presenting three lectures over the coming weeks. The first two lectures, on Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, will be given at Berkeley, under the rubric "Science and the University: An Evolutionary Tale." The third Kerr Lecture, at UC Irvine, will be given Nov. 28.
On Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m., Kennedy will present "The Endless Frontier" in the Berkeley Art Museum Theatre. A week later, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. in the Lipman Room, Barrows Hall, he will present "Bayh-Dole and Enclosing the Frontier." The lectures are free and open to the public.
Kennedy has edited Science since 2000. From 1980 to 1992 he was president of Stanford, where he is also Bing Professor of Environmental Science and Policy, Emeritus, and co-directs the Center for Environmental Sciences and Policy. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. Through these multiple roles, Kennedy has become a leading spokesperson for science and science policy.
Angela Davis will deliver Savio Lecture Nov. 1
Angela Davis, social activist and professor of history of consciousness and of feminist studies at UC Santa Cruz, will deliver the 11th annual Mario Savio Memorial Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in Pauley Ballroom, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center. Her lecture is titled "From Jim Crow to Guantanamo: Prisons, Democracy, and Empire." The evening, which honors the memory of the late Free Speech Movement leader Mario Savio, will also see the presentation of the 10th Mario Savio Young Activist Award. The event is sponsored by the Library, the Goldman School of Public Policy, the Graduate School of Journalism, the Free Speech Movement Café, and the Graduate Assembly. Admission is free.
Oct. 28 memorial service for Robert Mortimer
A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, to honor Robert Mortimer, an eminent yeast expert and professor emeritus of molecular and cell biology who died Aug. 10 from complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. He was 79. The service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Northbrae Community Church, 941 The Alameda, in north Berkeley.
Mortimer's obituary will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Berkeleyan.
Haas conference explores the role of diversity in innovation, Nov. 16
"Powering Innovation Through Diversity" is the theme of the third annual Haas Diversity in Business Conference, at which current and future managers will learn how to foster innovation through diverse thought and perspective; how to apply diversity to advance product development, sales, and marketing; and how to navigate changing corporate politics. The conference takes place Friday, Nov. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at International House.
Panelists include Redia Anderson, chief diversity officer, Deloitte Consulting; Derek Gordon, chief marketing officer, Clorox; Patty Herrera, director of multicultural initiatives, Oakland Raiders; Lisa Ross, vice president, multicultural communications, Ogilvy PR; and Daphne Sorro, vice president, diversity, learning, and recruiting, Gap Inc. The conference will also feature a dialogue with senior executives on the role that diversity plays in innovation and performance improvement within their organizations.
A lunchtime keynote address will be delivered by Gibor Basri, vice chancellor for equity and inclusion.

Sigma Epsilon Omega is out - and in
Sigma Epsilon Omega, Berkeley's only gay fraternity and one of the few in the United States, was voted into the campus Interfraternity Council on Oct. 17.
Established in February, SEO is open to any student who identifies as male - whether they identify as gay, straight, or bisexual - as long as they support SEO's mission statement.
