Recruitment effort is launched for three dean positions

The office of the vice provost for academic affairs and faculty welfare invites nominations and applications for three decanal positions currently open at Berkeley: dean of University Extension; dean of the College of Chemistry; and dean of the Division of Biological Sciences in the College of Letters and Science. Applicants for either of the latter two positions must be full professors on the Berkeley campus; applications for the University Extension deanship will be accepted from systemwide candidates who meet the job requirements.
Applications for the deanship of University Extension, one of the largest and most highly regarded university continuing-education organizations in the world, are welcome from candidates within the University of California system with relevant experience and qualifications in diverse fields. Applications must be received by Jan. 7, 2008; nominations are welcome and should be submitted by Dec. 18, 2007.

The dean of the College of Chemistry, reporting to the executive vice chancellor and provost, is responsible for the leadership and administration of the college. The dean is also responsible for academic and administrative operation of the college and acts by delegation of authority in resource allocation, personnel review, and program development. All applications must be received by Jan. 7, 2008, but earlier submissions are strongly encouraged. Applications should contain a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest. The committee also invites nominations, which should include complete contact information through either print or electronic means. Nominees will be contacted and invited to apply by the deadline.

The dean of Biological Sciences in L&S has direct responsibility for the departments of Integrative Biology and Molecular and Cell Biology and the Physical Education Program; he or she also oversees academic matters in five research units. The dean serves on the Council of Science and Engineering Deans and as an ex officio member of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Biology. The Biological Sciences Division currently has 115 FTE in faculty and a total budget of $259.2 million, which includes a permanent state budget of $19.9 million.
Applicants should submit a CV and a written expression of interest in the position, with a brief statement of their vision for Biological Sciences at Berkeley. The deadline for applications is Feb. 19, 2008; nominations of colleagues are welcome and should be submitted by Feb. 1, 2008.
