Memorial service for former Chancellor Bowker set for Feb. 4

A campus memorial service for former Berkeley Chancellor Albert Bowker will be held at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, at the Faculty Club. Bowker died Jan. 20 at the age of 88.

Feb. 19 deadline to nominate Regents' Professors and Lecturers

Nominations of Regents' Professors and Regents' Lecturers for upcoming academic years are made by campus schools and departments through their deans and department chairs. The due date for applications for the 2008-09 academic year is Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The purpose of this program is to bring to campus distinguished persons whose careers in arts, letters, sciences, or business have been substantially outside the academic profession. Detailed instructions about the nomination process and the program, and a downloadable copy of the nomination form, are on the website of the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare (vpaafw.chance.berkeley.edu/regents_professor.html). Applications and supporting letters should be forwarded by the nominators to the vice provost's office (200 California Hall #1500, attn.: Cathy Romanski) by the Feb. 19 deadline.

Excellence in Management award nominations due Feb. 20

The Berkeley Staff Assembly (BSA) has called for nominations for the 20th annual Excellence in Management Award program.

The theme for 2007-08 is "Riding the Wave of Successful Succession." The BSA wishes to honor supervisors and managers who are skillfully addressing the needs of their unit and their individual employees as they navigate the current and impending turnover in the campus workforce. These managers are mindful of identifying the potential impact of vacancies, and actively developing administrative practices to help their unit excel. They are also highly effective in creating opportunities for their employees to gain skills and competencies necessary for advancement.

Nominations must originate from staff directly supervised by the nominee and include supporting signatures from at least one-half of these staff. The award is open to all levels of employees who have had management or supervisory responsibilities for one year or more in their current positions. Individuals who won last year are not eligible for re-nomination this year.

Nominations must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Award recipients will be announced in April, while the awards ceremony will be held at noon on May 12 at International House's Chevron Auditorium. For more information and a nomination form, visit bsa.berkeley.edu.

International House offers financial assistance for room and board

Financial assistance for international students, U.S. citizens, and permanent residents to live at I-House is available for the 2008-09 academic year and for fall semester 2008. Those eligible are graduate or upper-division students who will have already completed one academic year at Berkeley and who demonstrate financial need. Applications are available in the foyer of the Human Resources and Residence offices at International House and on the I-House website (ihouse.berkeley.edu). The application deadline is March 3.

eScholarship Repository exceeds 5 million full-text downloads

The University of California's widely used eScholarship Repository has surpassed the 5 million mark for full-text downloads of its open-access scholarly content. Academic units and departments from the 10 UC campuses have published or deposited more than 20,000 papers and works with the repository since its inception in 2002.

Part of a suite of publishing services developed by the California Digital Library (CDL) in recent years, the eScholarship Repository serves the scholarly-publishing needs of individual faculty and academic departments, laboratories, and research units across the UC system, providing a robust full-spectrum, open-access publishing platform for pre-prints, post-prints, peer-reviewed articles, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed journals. The repository houses a broad range of scholarly content from disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and sciences. It is also a central mechanism in the collaborative publishing efforts between the CDL and the University of California Press.
