UC annual payroll report released for 2007
The University of California has released its annual report on systemwide employee compensation for calendar year 2007. The report is available at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/compensation/payroll2007.
Key points from the most recent report include:
• Approximately 40 percent of compensation in 2007 went to professors, clinical professors, other teaching faculty, researchers, and other academic positions directly engaged in the university’s academic mission.
• Clinical faculty and athletics personnel continue to dominate the list of high earners at UC.
• Compensation “above base pay” paid to senior managers increased by $200,000 in 2007, and still represents less than 1 percent of the total.
Because UC is a public institution, employee compensa-tion is considered a public record under the California Public Records Act. The payroll data on which the 2007 report is based are publicly available upon request at each UC campus; at Berkeley they are housed at the reference desk in Doe Library. They may also be obtained from the UC Office of the President in Oakland.

New medical director on board at University Health Services
Brad Buchman, M.D., has joined University Health Services as medical director. His responsibilities include ensuring a high quality of care, supervising clinical operations and the occupational-health program, and seeing patients in the Urgent Care, Primary Care, and Sports Medicine units.
Buchman comes to Berkeley from UC San Diego, where he served as director of clinical services at the campus Student Health Center. He earned his M.D. from UC San Diego School of Medicine. His new job is a homecoming of sorts: Buchman received his A.B. in genetics at Berkeley. He has retained his faculty appointment at UC San Diego, where he was an associate clinical professor at the medical school, and hopes to teach at Berkeley in the future.
Robert D. Grey named interim UC provost
UC President Mark Yudof announced this week his appointment of Robert D. Grey as interim provost of the UC system, effective Aug. 20. Grey is a longtime academic administrator who has served as provost and executive vice chancellor of UC Davis and, most recently, as acting chancellor of UC Riverside.
Grey, 68, will assume on an interim basis the responsibilities of Wyatt Hume, who announced in June that he will become provost of United Arab Emirates University. A search is under way for a permanent provost, who will be the chief academic officer of the university and will serve as the No. 2 systemwide administrator to President Yudof
