CSAC nominations due by Oct. 24

The Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Committee (CSAC) is recruiting new members to serve three-year terms beginning in January 2009. CSAC is a committee of up to 16 staff employees and three alternates from various control units and departments who reflect the broad diversity for which the campus is known. All non-academic career employees on the Berkeley campus, with the exception of executive-tier appointees, are eligible to apply.

This is an opportunity to learn about staff experiences, to work with colleagues from other parts of campus, and to broaden personal knowledge of the campus policy-making process. CSAC provides staff perspective and advises campus administration on a wide range of issues, policies, and programs that affect staff.

For more information, attend an information session to be held in October, and visit the committee website at csac.chance.berkeley.edu. Applications will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 24, at 5 p.m. Interested staff may also contact 2009 CSAC Chair Ian Crew at icrew@berkeley.edu or 642-7795.

Time change for constitutional presentation on Sept. 18

Louis Fisher, a specialist in constitutional law at the Law Library of the Library of Congress, will discuss his new book, The Constitution and 9/11: Recurring Threats to America’s Freedoms (University Press of Kansas), on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in 119 Moses Hall (Harris Room); this is a change from the previously announced starting time.

Distilling more than two centuries of history into a panoramic and compelling narrative, Fisher chronicles the longstanding tension between protecting our constitutional rights and safeguarding national security, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the McCarthy hearings to George W. Bush’s “war on terror.”

Green-building lecture set for Sept. 22

Mechanical engineering professor Arun Majumdar, director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will deliver a free lecture, “Buildings That Think Green: The Next Generation of Smart Energy Technologies,” on Monday, Sept. 22, from 5:30 to
7 p.m. at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Thrust Stage), 2025 Addison St. in Berkeley.

Majumdar is leading a team of scientists hoping to create a new generation of net-zero-energy, carbon-neutral buildings, with the goal of reducing today’s energy demands by 90 percent in new buildings and by 50 percent in retrofitted older buildings by 2030. The High-Performance Building Research and Implementation Center (HiPerBRIC), now in development, expects to be a hub of global innovation, attracting the world’s best scientists, engineers, architects, and social scientists to work on high-performance building technologies.

Majumdar is also director of the Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute.

UHS encourages you to get fit this fall

University Health Services invites staff and faculty to enroll in Healthy U, a healthy-lifestyle incentive program. The 12-week program, which runs Sept. 29 through Dec. 19, helps participants focus on nutrition and exercise in order to “maintain not gain” weight through the holiday season. Participants can track their progress online, and will receive e-mails each Monday with suggestions for weekly goals, recipes, and reminders. All registered participants will receive a memo board and are eligible for weekly prize drawings, as well as the chance to win an iPod Nano or grand prize Nintendo Wii system upon completion of the program.

To register, visit uhs.berkeley.edu/facstaff/healthmatters/healthyu.
