Application window open for community-fund grants
The Office of Community Relations is inviting local community groups to apply for grants from the Chancellor’s Community Partnership Fund for 2009-10.
The fund will distribute $218,000 for neighborhood-improvement and community-support and -service projects that bring together ideas, expertise, and resources from UC Berkeley and the community. Funded projects will further the economic, social, or cultural well-being of Berkeley residents.
Grant proposals are due by May 15, and awards will be announced in August. A workshop for interested applicants will be held March 23, from 4:30-6 p.m. in 150 University Hall; RSVPs should be e-mailed. Green Initiative Fund proposals due March 31
The Green Initiative Fund, now in its third year, has nearly $250,000 available to fund projects proposed by faculty, staff, or students — thanks to a $5 per semester student fee. Any project that addresses environmental sustainability on campus may be eligible for an award. For more information and an application, visit tgif.berkeley.edu. Applications are due March 31 by midnight; grantees will be announced in April. An information session for applicants will be held on March 11 at 3 p.m. in 416 Eshleman; contact nicole.leung@berkeley.edu with questions.
Spring bSpace workshops offered by ETS
Educational Technology Services’ Training and Support Center offers a range of workshops this spring for faculty, GSIs, and staff wishing to familiarize themselves with bSpace, the campus’s online course-management application. Workshops will focus on creating and using content, managing online discussions, using the Guidebook function to record and export student grades, and related tasks.
Registration is free but requires a CalNet ID. For workshop schedules and to link to a registration webpage, visit bspace.berkeley.edu.
ICE is history: It’s the UCB Learning Center now
The Interactive Course Enrollment (ICE) application, familiar to many on campus who used it to sign up for workshops and courses offered by various nonacademic units, was retired in December and replaced by the UCB Learning Center. To browse workshop and class listings and enroll in one or more of your choice, log in to Blu, then select “UCB Learning Center” under Self Service. A CalNet ID is required for authentication.
Campus participants sought for S.F. Marathon team
The School of Public Health’s Arsenic Research Group is affiliated with a nonprofit group, Project Well, that provides safe drinking water for the people of West Bengal, India. Campus-community members interested in running (or walking) this year’s San Francisco Marathon course in late July, in support of Project Well, can contact Jane Liaw for information.
New IGS journal focuses on Golden State politics
California Journal of Politics and Policy is a new electronic journal produced by the campus Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS). The inaugural issue includes assessments of the prospect that redistricting reform might reduce legislative deadlock, and an analysis of how a “geopolitical shift” in California has aided Democrats and divided Republicans.
