Cal Day is this weekend!
Saturday, April 18, is the campus's annual open house. Cal Day organizers, thrilled by the weekend weather forecast, are gearing up to welcome more than 35,000 visitors with a full range of events: lectures, walks and tours, children's activities, and more.
Cal Day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at venues all over campus. If you're not among the hundreds of staffers, faculty, and students who will be helping out that day, you can plan your schedule the way a visitor would, by consulting the online Cal Day program.
Al Gore to join dignitaries at Blum Center groundbreaking
Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore will speak at the groundbreaking for the new home of the Richard C. Blum Center for Developing Economies, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. He will be joined at the ceremony by UC Regent Richard Blum, UC President Mark Yudof, and Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. The campus community is invited to attend the event, which will take place outside the Naval Architecture Building on the north side of the campus.
Following the ceremony, students will present their wide-ranging research directed at combating global poverty. The student presentations will be in the new CITRIS building, Sutardja Dai Hall.
The Blum Center, a multidisciplinary academic initiative to combat poverty, was established in 2006 through a founding gift from Blum.
Sustainability Summit set for Earth Day, April 22
UC Berkeley's Sixth Annual Sustainability Summit, hosted by the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Sustainability (CACS), is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, from
8 a.m. to noon in the Chevron Auditorium at International House. All are welcome, and admission is free.
This year's theme is "Green: The Color of Change." A keynote address, "The Future of Green Policy," will be delivered by Ian Kim of the Ella Baker Center.; a number of informative breakout sessions on diverse topics will also be held. Following the summit, participants can take part in a Strawberry Creek Cleanup co-sponsored by Environment, Health, and Safety; lunch will be provided for volunteers. To RSVP for the cleanup and lunch, contact Tim Pine.
May 5 conference on economic impacts of climate policies
On Tuesday, May 5, the UC Berkeley Labor Center, Apollo Alliance, and others will hold a conference about the job and equity impacts of climate-change policies such as cap-and-trade. The conference will take place at International House from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The keynote speaker will be Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, the new CEO of Green for All. Other speakers include Berkeley faculty members Dan Kammen and David Roland-Holst, as well as policymakers, labor and business leaders, environmental-justice advocates, and others.

NYU's Waldron to deliver Tanner Lectures
This year's Tanner Lectures on Human Values will be delivered by Jeremy Waldron of New York University's School of Law. "Dignity and Rank" will be delivered on Tuesday, April 21, while "Law, Status, and Self-Control" will be delivered on Wednesday, April 22; both lectures are scheduled for 4:10-6:30 p.m. in the Toll Room, Alumni House. In addition, a seminar and discussion will take place on Thursday, April 23, at the same time and in the same venue.
