Four named AAAS fellows
Berkeley's four newest American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellows, named April 20, bring the campus's roster of AAAS fellows to 226. They are Mary Elizabeth Berry, Dean's Professor of East Asian History and chair of the history department; Steven Gwon Sheng Louie, professor of physics; Dan Slobin, professor emeritus in psychology and linguistics; and Philip Tetlock, the Lorraine Tyson Mitchell Chair II in Leadership and Communication and a professor of leadership at the Haas School of Business.
New members will be inducted during October ceremonies in Cambridge, Mass.
Faculty and academic staff 'climate' survey launches
The second phase of the Staff Workplace Climate and Career-Life Issues Survey will be launched this week, focusing on faculty and academic staff and containing specific modules for faculty, lecturers, and researchers. As with the first survey, of career non-academic staff — results from which will be available in the fall — participation is voluntary and responses will be kept confidential.
The survey's second phase is under the direction of Sheldon Zedeck, Vice Provost, Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare; Angelica Stacy, Associate Vice Provost, Faculty Equity; and Gibor Basri, Vice Chancellor, Equity and Inclusion. A pending CalMessage invitation from Vice Provost Zedeck describes the survey and includes a link to the survey website.
Volunteers needed for Cal Summerfest, May 13
Cal Summerfest, Berkeley's annual staff-appreciation event, is back this year with the traditional free food, free massages, free T-shirts (to the first 2,000 attendees), and other activities. Volunteers for this year's event (1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 13) are sought for one-hour time commitments; each person who signs up will receive a Summerfest T-shirt and lunch.
To sign up, visit summerfest.berkeley.edu and click on the "volunteers" link.
Goldman Environmental Prize to former Beahrs participant
A Bangladeshi participant in the 2003 Beahrs Environ-mental Leadership Program at Berkeley was awarded a Goldman Environ-mental Prize this week for her work to reduce the impact of the ship-breaking industry in that nation. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, 40, is executive director of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, a public-interest law firm.
The Goldman Prize, sponsored by Bay Area philanthropists Richard and Rhoda Goldman, awards $150,000 to each of this year's six recipients, who will, it is expected, use the funding to advance their environmental goals.
Alumni Awards nomination deadline approaches
The California Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2010 Alumnus/a of the Year Award, as well as for the Excellence in Achievement and Excellence in Service awards and the Mark Bingham and Bradford S. King awards for distinguished young alumni. All nominations are due by May 31. For nomination forms and more information, visit alumni.berkeley.edu/awards.
For the record . . .
In last issue's feature on the 2009 Distinguished Teaching Awards, we erred in saying that Professor Maximilian Aufhammer "revitalized . . . one of the least successful courses in Agricultural and Resource Economics . . . turning it into one of the most popular and successful courses in the graduate program." The course, Intermediate Micro-economics, is sited in Inter-national and Area Studies and directed at undergraduates.
In the same issue, we misspelled the name of Chancellor's Outstanding Staff Award recipient Delores Dillard. At the COSA event itself, award-presentation duties were co-shouldered not by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost George Breslauer but by Associate Vice Chancellor Steve Lustig.
