WHAT:

Press briefing on the University of California, Berkeley's plans to build new student housing, which would provide 850 new beds, as well as a seismically-secure central dining and office complex. In addition, the master plan for the Underhill area, on the south side of campus, includes a parking structure for 1,000 vehicles with a sports field on top.

Color drawings showing the planned housing units and dining complex will be available at the briefing, as will the draft environmental impact report on the area plan.

WHEN: Friday, April 7, from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
WHERE: The east dining room of the Unit 1 residence hall, a high-rise complex at the corner of College and Durant avenues, on UC Berkeley's south side.
WHO: Campus planning, and housing and dining officials will explain the plans and designs for the housing facilities and answer questions. In addition, residence hall students will be available to comment.

BACKGROUND: Available housing has become one of the most important issues to UC Berkeley students. The new project will provide two residence-hall style complexes and two apartment-style complexes. The current dining halls, which are not seismically secure, will be replaced by one central dining facility.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISUALS: Students having lunch in the Unit 1 dining hall; areas proposed for new housing; and architectural drawings of the proposed facilities.
