WHAT
A media tour of renovation and temporary closure plans for the University of California, Berkeley's Sproul Plaza, the historic gateway to the campus and main hub for student activities.
UC Berkeley officials announced today (Wednesday, Feb. 18) that the plaza will close for three months as a major renovation project gets underway to improve plaza safety and accessibility. The plan will entail leveling and repaving the area, repairing underground utilities, resetting handrails, and renovating the student bulletin boards.
The work on Upper Sproul Plaza will begin March 22, the start of spring break. The project is scheduled for completion by June 25. During that time, the area will be closed and all student activities will move to nearby Lower Sproul Plaza.
WHEN
Tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m.
WHERE
Reporters should meet at Sather Gate.
WHO
Jim Horner, the campus's landscape architect, will walk reporters through the area, identifying and explaining areas to be renovated, safety hazards that will be repaired and pedestrian traffic routes to be diverted.
Karen Kenney, UC Berkeley's dean of students, will discuss plans to help minimize disruption to students who use Upper Sproul Plaza for so many of their activities.
