Entomologist Casida Speaks on Pesticides

John Casida, professor of chemical and molecular entomology, will deliver a Faculty Research Lecture on “Safe Pesticides: Mission Impossible?” Tuesday, March 10, at 5 p.m. in 1 Pimentel Hall.

Casida is director of the Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory, principal investigator of a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Program Project and holds the William Muriece Hoskins Chair in chemical and molecular entomology.

Faculty Stipends for Freshman Seminars

Chancellor Berdahl has announced a new $2,000 stipend available to any faculty, active or emeritus, teaching a one- or two-unit freshman seminar in addition to regular teaching assignments, beginning in fall 1998.

This three-year pilot initiative has been designed to help increase the number of offerings in the freshman seminar program, under which entering students work closely with a faculty member and a small group of fellow students on a topic of mutual intellectual interest.

The new stipend may be used for research-related expenses such as travel, equipment or research assistance, or for expense related to the seminar. The funds can be carried forward from year to year.

Seminars may be taught by faculty from any department, and may include units that do not offer an undergraduate major. The range of topics is virtually unlimited, although narrowly focused topics are the most successful in this one- to two-hour format.

For information, browse the program website at For guidelines, contact program coordinator Alix Schwartz (642-8378 or To appear in the brochure, course descriptions must reach Schwartz by March 16.
