New Employee Orientation
April 7 and 21, 8:30 a.m.-noon.

This orientation, offered twice monthly, covers campus structure and culture, benefits, computer competency and safety-related issues. Presentations addressing these issues are given by staff from the campus police department; Environment, Health and Safety; University Health Services; and the campus benefits office.

Business Writing Workshop Series
March 17, 18, 19 and 31, and April 2, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

These ”brush-up” workshops offer experienced writers information on challenging business writing issues. Subject experts will offer ideas to help make your writing process more efficient, effective and professional.

You may register for one or both of the following workshops:

Grammar and Punctuation Challenges, March 31;
Persuasive Writing for Promotion and Marketing, April 2.

Eat Smart, Get Fit: A Lifestyle Management Program
March 31- May 19, 12:10-1 p.m., $40.

An eight-week class for developing healthy eating and exercise habits you can live with. Topics include eating behaviors, exercise, and stress management. Class includes phone consultations and office hours with the nutritionist.

Parenting “Active/Spirited” Children
March 30, noon-1:30 p.m.

Dianne Rush Woods of CARE Services will address the most common issues associated with parenting a “spirited child,” including the inevitable frustrations for parents and helpful strategies for decreasing family tension and conflict.

Making a Fresh Start in Your Work and Work Relationships
April 3 and 10, 10 p.m.-noon.

Making a fresh start at work often requires that we address personal issues such as feelings of anger or resentment, acknowledging and learning from past mistakes, communicating constructively and setting goals for the future. If you are interested in making a fresh start, or you have been given a new opportunity and want to make the most of it, this workshop, co-sponsored with the Staff Ombuds Office, may help.

Issues for Asian and Asian-American Parents
Apr. 6, noon-1:30 p.m.

Ann Yabusaki, a therapist in private practice in Berkeley, has worked extensively with non-Caucasian and multi-cultural families. She will discuss issues concerning Asian children in the context of dealing with stereotypes, generational differences and language differences. The discussion will focus on strategies for addressing these culturally specific issues as they relate to healthy child-rearing.

Dealing With Difficult Situations and Behaviors in the Workplace
April 6 and 8; or June 1 and 3, 10 a.m.-noon.

This two-part workshop, offered twice, will help participants learn ways to analyze and deal constructively with problematic situations, people and personal styles at work. Topics will include anger management; difficult styles and strategies for dealing with them; effective communication using role playing, listening/speaking skills, and body language awareness; giving and receiving criticism; as well as protocols for appropriate communications involving email, voice mail, written notes and cc’s, and verbal communication. Co-sponsored with the Staff Ombuds Office.
