Art Under the Big Top

Contortionists, acrobatic cy-clists and clowns are a few of the performers featured in a traveling circus of art that will come to campus Wednesday, April 1.

Circus Momentous is a group of student artists in the UC system who re-envision the history of the circus, carnival and fair with gallery exhibits, films and performances.

The show begins at 5:30 p.m. with a circus cycle rally on lower Sproul Plaza, followed by a 6 p.m. gallery reception and performance in the Worth Ryder Gallery and a film and video screening at 8 p.m. at Pacific Film Archives.

The accompanying exhibit will be on display at the Worth Ryder Gallery in Kroeber Hall beginning March 30 through April 10. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Members of Circus Momentous have described their work as “a re-examination of issues surrounding turn-of-the-century notions of carnival, fair freak show and masquerade.”

This historical study of identity investigates “how we mark, disguise and reinvent our political, personal and sexual selves.” The artists then relate these themes to current culture.
