Obituaries Publications		Chenming Hu Chenming Hu, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, received the Monie A. Ferst Award from Sigma Xi, a national society dedicated to promoting science. The award recognizes those who have fostered outstanding research through education. Hu will accept the honor at an awards banquet at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in May. Mauro Ferrari As of Feb. 1, Mauro Ferrari, associate professor of materials science and of civil engineering, became the new editor-in-chief of Biomedical Microdevices: An International Journal. The peer-reviewed periodical is published by Kluwer, which recently merged with Elsevier to form the largest academic publishing network in the world. Ferrari’s work on biomedical microdevices includes microfabricated capsules for the immunoisolation of cell transplants for the therapy of diabetes; microfabricated intravascular systems for delivering anticancer drugs; and microfabricated nanofilter membranes for eliminating viruses from plasma derivatives. Berkeley professors Richard Mathies of chemical engineering and Albert Pisano of mechanical engineering are members of journal’s editorial board. John Quigley John M. Quigley, professor of economics and public policy, was elected president of the Western Regional Science Association at its 38th annual meeting in March. The group is an affiliation of regional economists, geographers and students of regional development from more than 20 countries. It organizes meetings and symposia and sponsors a quarterly journal. During 1997-98, Quigley served as president of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, an academic affiliation of urban economists and finance specialists founded in 1964. Last June, Quigley was named Chancellor’s Professor of economics and public policy by departing Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien. Ernest Kuh and Ron Shen Ernest S. Kuh, professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer sciences, and Ron Shen, professor of physics, received honorary degrees from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Tung Chee-hwa, chief executive of the city of Hong Kong and chancellor of the university, presented Kuh with an honorary doctorate of engineering and Shen with an honorary doctorate of science at a ceremony in Hong Kong late last year. The two were honored along with three individuals from Hong Kong representing business, law and humanities.
