CED Newsletter Wins Design CompetitionThe winter 1997 edition of the College of Environmental Design newsletter CED Views recently received a silver award in the Summit Creative Awards international design competition. The Summit awards recognize exceptional creative work in 16 categories by small design firms and creative groups in the United States, Canada and Australia. CED Views, published three times yearly, is edited by Sheila Dickie, director of alumni and public relations for the College, and designed by Chen Design Associates of San Francisco. The design firm developed the look and feel of the issue its 3D-like masthead and all other design elements in cooperation with Dickie and CED Dean Harrison Fraker. Elizabeth SimpsonElizabeth L. Simpson, housing facilities manager for Foothill, Stern and Bowles student housing, is the new president-elect of the Western Association of College and University Housing Officers. Simpson was elected March 31 at the associations 42nd annual conference, held at Pepperdine University, Malibu. A professional organization for university and college housing officers, the association includes institutions from California, Nevada, Oregon and Hawaii. Simpson, a Berkeley graduate, has been in the housing profession for 19 years, working in conference services at UCLA and Berkeley and as assignments and facilities management on the Berkeley campus. She is currently completing a term as the associations vice president. C. Judson KingC. Judson King will deliver the Electrochemical Society Plenary Lecture at the societys 193rd meeting May 4 in San Diego. He will discuss The Research University of the 21st Century. King is professor of chemical engineering and provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of the University of California. Among other things, he is responsible for academic planning and research and academic policies for the UC system, including academic and programmatic coordination among the nine UC campuses and the three national labs managed by the univeristy. Pamela SamuelsonThe National Law Journal has named Pamela A. Samuelson, professor at the School of Information Management and Systems and Boalt School of Law, one of 50 top women lawyers in the country. Samuelson is a key figure in intellectual property law and legal issues related to computer software and the Internet. A leading critic of the Clinton administrations proposal to extend copyright law into cyberspace, she co-directs the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, which she helped establish two years ago. Samuelson has taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Columbia, Cornell and Emory universities. Last year, she was named a fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She is also a fellow of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and writes for Wired magazine. Social Sciences AwardsThe Division of Social Sciences in Letters and Science has named the winners of its annual distinguished teaching and distinguished service awards. Recipients of the teaching award are Ann Swidler, sociology; Reginald Zelnik, history; Maurice Obstfeld, economics; and Sharon Inkelas, linguistics. This years theme for the teaching award is innovation and effectiveness in working with individual students, as well as sustained excellence in undergraduate and graduate classroom teaching. Each recipient received an honorarium of $3,000. The outstanding service award went to Sheldon Zedeck, professor of psychology. This award recognizes tenured or tenure-track faculty who have been particularly generous, effective and responsible in serving their departments and the wider campus. The winners will be honored at a private reception hosted by William S. Simmons, dean of social sciences. |
