Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education The Graduate Division will sponsor a day-long conference on diversity in graduate education on Wednesday, Sept. 23, made possible, in part, by a grant from the Sloan Foundation. The conference at International House, "Achieving Graduate Diversity in a Post-Proposition 209 Environment," is intended to inspire dialogue on graduate diversity and share successful techniques for maintaining diversity in both California and nationally. Chancellor Berdahl will deliver the keynote address. Featured speakers will include Ricardo Romo, vice provost of the University of Texas at Austin, and Richard Tapia, professor at Rice University. Representatives from the University of Michigan and most UC campuses will also speak. Panels, workshops and symposia will be conducted on such topics as comparative diversity efforts, mentoring, recruitment, admissions and retention. The conference is free for Berkeley faculty, staff and students, but registration is required by Friday, Sept. 4. "National concern over the future of affirmative action and access to opportunities in higher education for women and underrepresented students of color make this gathering timely and urgent," said Z. Renee Sung, associate dean of the Graduate Division in charge of diversity and fellowships. "The conference will provide new tools and strategies for maintaining excellence and diversity in graduate education."
