15 Years of Campus Posters

Campus Designer Jenne Mowry Showcased This Month at YWCA

posted September 16, 1998

Jenne Mowry, a senior artist in the office of New Student Services, has been designing campus posters for the past 15 years. More than 45 of these cut-paper-style creations will be on display through Sept. 30 at the Berkeley YWCA on Bancroft Way at Bowditch.

Mowry is best known for her Welcome Week posters, T-shirts and buttons, which she has created each year since 1983. The entire 15-year Welcome Week series is included in the show as well as various other works that she produced for the campus. Among them are the Cal Team AIDS Ride posters and the Bear Link poster.

"It was neat for me to see the whole Welcome Week series on display," said Mowry. "It was personally an eye opener because I could see my progression as an artist."

Mowry started working in the office of Student Activities and Services in the early '80s (when she was still a student) and hasn't held an off-campus job since. She has designed many of the posters as freelance projects in her spare time. In her current campus position with New Student Services, she edits and designs the Resource Guide, a book for new students on how to navigate the campus and the city.

Since 1991, Mowry has created all of her posters on a Macintosh computer using the application FreeHand and a mouse.

"I usually break one or two mice a year," she said. "All the drawing just wears them out."

Mowry's artistic services are now available on a recharge basis to campus departments and units. She can be reached at 642-4881 or jmowry@uclink4.berkeley.edu.

On Sept. 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mowry will be at the YWCA for a reception. This event, which is open to the public, will include a give-away of posters and buttons from past years.
