Within days after the pledge package was delivered to faculty and staff via campus mail, the first return envelope arrived on Sautter's desk -- from UC Police Department Capt. William Foley. "This helps supplement my direct giving," Foley said. "And it helps me stay involved in a variety of community organizations. When I can't donate time, at least I have the opportunity to donate resources to their causes." By Nov. 23, less than a week after Foley's lone envelope appeared in 140 University Hall, Sautter says he had "about four inches worth" of pledge envelopes waiting to be processed. "The initial response has been very good," says Sautter. "We still would like staff and faculty to talk to their colleagues about donating -- to make this a banner year for the campaign." This year, 100 percent of each donation will go directly to the charitable cause selected, Sautter notes. Faculty and staff may contribute to any of hundreds of groups covered by United Way of the Bay Area's Community Impact Fund. They may also give to the Berkeley Pledge outreach program, the United Way Community Impact Fund, the Combined Health Appeal of California (for groups working on health issues) or the University YWCA. The largest Campaign donation Sautter recalls in recent years was a gift of more than $10,000 from a faculty member. "I also get custodians who send two dollars in cash. It's real nice," said Sautter. "They're giving what they can." Last year's Charitable Campaign raised more than $200,000.
