Beat the Holiday Rush by Shopping on Campus posted December 09, 1998 Holiday shoppers can escape maddening crowds and parking nightmares by purchasing unique and charming gifts, many for under $10, right here on campus. During lunch, on breaks or just after work is a great time to pick up handmade crafts, books, jewelry, Cal memorabilia, science toys and performance tickets at nearby outlets. Give the gift of music, dance and theater with gift certificates from Cal Performances. World-renowned artists from every field grace campus stages virtually every week of the year. Take the guess work out of choosing by letting that special someone decide which performance to see and when. Gift certificates can be purchased at the Zellerbach ticket office or by calling 642-9988. The Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive store boasts one of the best selections of books on art, architecture and film to be found in the Bay Area, along with postcards, jewelry, calendars and posters. Fans of the current Joan Brown exhibit can pick up a commemorative coffee mug featuring her folksy artwork, while supplies last. For information, call 642-1475. The spirit of Berkeley can be found by the shopping-bag-full at the ASUC Student Store, located on the first floor of the MLK Student Union. Sweatshirts,T-shirts, jackets and hats, all bearing the Cal logo, are a perfect way to stay warm and show school spirit. Key chains, ties, and stuffed animals are available. Books, electronics, stationery and computer supplies are also located on the first floor. For information, call 642-9000. Unique presents from exotic locales are available at the Hearst Museum gift shop, including leather coin purses from India, hemp bags from Thailand, Egyptian scarabs and Guatemalan worry dolls, all under $10. The museum purchases many of these items directly from the artisans who create them. An exceptional selection of jewelry is also available, such as ebony and silver from Africa, jade and serpentine from China and pieces from various Native American tribes. For information, call 643-7648. The Lawrence Hall of Science's Discovery Corner Store is loaded with fun and educational gifts for kids, including microscopes, electricity and chemistry kits, math games and construction sets. Adults will enjoy a floating pen that magically hangs in midair or a millennium clock that provides a countdown to the year 2000. Faculty, staff and students receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases over $10 through Jan. 3. For information, call 642-1629. Archival photos of Berkeley's historic past are elegantly featured in a spiral-bound flip calendar produced by the Public Affairs Office. The calendar documents Berkeley through the decades with photos that include the Campanile under construction in 1914; the campus's first Nobel laureate, Ernest Lawrence, in front of his atom-smashing cyclotron; and "The Play," the five-lateral kickoff return that beat Stanford in the 1982 Big Game. Faculty and staff can purchase the calendar at the discounted price of $10. Calendars are available at 101 Sproul Hall and 2120 Oxford St., 3rd floor, or by calling 643-7843.
