The event, which is sponsored by the department of Classics, the Graduate Group in Ancient History, the Dean of Humanities, the Townsend Center for Humanities, the Dean of the Graduate Division and the Dean of Social Sciences, will be held in 370 Dwinelle Hall from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entitled "Genethlia", which in ancient Greek means a "birthday celebration," the symposium will feature informal remarks and scholarly papers by two dozen participants who will be coming from as far away as Greece.

Volunteers Needed To Test Computer Usability

Workstation Support Services (WSS) is looking for faculty, staff and students with any level of computer skill to help do usability testing on the following:

• A new design for the UCLink web site (UCLink is the campus e-mail service).

• A revised design for the Connecting@Berkeley software installers.

The results of the test will help WSS fine-tune these designs so they're as easy to use and effective as possible. The testing will take about one hour and may be done at WSS in Evans Hall or at the volunteer's personal workstation.

UCLink testing will take place in May, Connecting@ Berkeley testing in late May and June. Tests will be scheduled to occur at times convenient to the participants.

For information, or to obtain a participant application form, email sarah@scorates.berkeley.edu or call Sarah Jones at 643-6729.

Cal Cyclists Raising Bucks to Fight AIDS

Within the next few months, a grassroots effort will attempt to break a campus fundraising record in the fight against AIDS. The Cal Team -- comprised of 65 UC Berkeley staff, students and alumni -- is leading the drive as part of the California AIDS Ride, a 580-mile, seven-day bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The campus community has an opportunity to help out by attending "Cal Team Night" at the Pyramid Brewery and Ale House on Wednesday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. (901 Gilman St. at 9th St. in Berkeley). A $10 ticket buys a free beverage, snacks and a tour of the brewery. Proceeds go directly to the AIDS Ride.

Another way to help the team is by making a financial pledge, by credit card or checking account installments. To make a pledge, call 643-2689.

Volunteers are also needed to help out on registration day, when more than the 2,500 riders participating in the ride converge in San Francisco. To volunteer, call the San Francisco AIDS Ride Office at (415) 908-0400.

New Center to Focus on International Labor Issues

On March 8, Berkeley's Institute of Industrial Relations (IIR) and the Center for Labor Research and Education (CLRE) announced the creation of the John F. Henning Center for International Labor Relations.

"We see this collaboration between the labor movement and the University as a key step to addressing one of the most critical issues of our time -- globalization and its impact on workers around the world," said James R. Lincoln, IIR director.

Named for Hon. John F. Henning, former Ambassador to New Zealand, Undersecretary of Labor, UC Regent, and longtime Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the California Labor Federation, the Henning Center will focus on strategies for global unionism, a lifetime passion for Henning.

Henning was also named Distinguished Labor Leader-in-Residence at IIR, and is the first labor leader to be honored as such by the University of California.

The programmatic work will include promoting international relationships of labor researchers and labor activists, as well as supporting policy research on the global economy and its impact on working Californians. The CLRE staff will coordinate research, publications, convenings and trainings in partnership with labor unions and other interested parties.
