Architects Build Structures and Science Awareness

Posted June 9, 1999 An active imagination and an unlimited supply of snap-together building blocks are the only tools needed to create structural wonders at "K'Nexploration," Lawrence Hall of Science's newest exhibit, opening Saturday June 19 through Sept. 5. Using brightly colored pieces of K'Nex, the popular building toy, visitors young and old can create their own structures, machines and vehicles at 16 different work stations. The exhibit also features life-size dioramas made entirely with K'Nex. The activities and dioramas focus on several science themes: evolution and the adaptation of environments; structural strength, shapes and geometry; simple and complex machinery, like pulleys and gears; and forces, motion, friction, gravity and energy. Particpants may purchase the models they create using the optional weigh/pay program. For children under five, a special area has been created. The museum is also featuring Summer Science Fundays, every Wednesday from June 23 to Aug. 25. Programs include hands-on activities and entertainment, such as Walter the Giant Storyteller, Ice Cream Day and a solar eclipse festival.
