Awards Posted October 6, 1999 Six Garner Faculty Research Awards for Biosciences Six faculty members received 1999 awards from the Faculty Research Fund for the Biological Sciences.The 1999 recipients are: James Berger, molecular and cell biology; Todd Dawson, integrative biology; Wilhelm Gruissem, plant and microbial biology; Tyrone Hayes, integrative biology; Robert Lane, environmental science, policy and management; and Tito Serafini, molecular and cell biology. Walter Koenig At its recent meeting in Ithaca, NY, the American Ornithologists' Union named Walter Koenig, adjunct professor of integrative biology and research zoologist at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, as this year's recipient of the William Brewster Memorial Award. The Brewster Award is given to the author or co-authors of the most meritorious body of work on avian biology in the Western Hemisphere published in the preceeding decade. Recipients receive a medal and honorarium through the union's endowed William Brewster Memorial Fund. Donald Olander Nuclear Eengineering Professor Donald Olander was honored in an April, 1999, special issue of the Journal of Nuclear Materials. Dedicated to Olander in recognition of his contributions to the field of nuclear materials, the issue contains 27 papers written by Olander's former doctoral students and colleagues from labs, universities and industry around the world Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, has been named chief technology adviser for Cadence Design Systems Inc. Paul Silva Paul Silva, research botanist and curator of algae in the University Herbarium, has been given the Phycological Society of America Award of Excellence. "His research on the systematics and nomenclature of algae," said the citation, "has been the major guide for phycologists around the world." Silva founded the International Phycological Society in 1961 and edited its journal, Phycologia, from 1961 to 1970. Robert Tjian Professor of biochemistry & molecular biology Robert Tjian is the recipient of the 1999 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize awarded by the Trustees of Columbia University. This award honors scientists who have made outstanding contributions to basic research in the fields of biology and biochemistry. Kent Udell Mechanical engineering Professor Kent Udell recently was honored with the Outstanding Remediation Technology Innovation Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of "technical excellence in the development of innovative in situ thermal treatment technologies." The honor recognizes his work in developing a "steam-cleaning" method for removing toxins from soils, most recently used to clean up contaminants left at closed military bases. Udell was honored by the agency in a special ceremony in August. Olly Wilson Professor of music Olly Wilson has been appointed to the board of directors of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University.
