News Briefs Posted November 10, 1999 Big Game Express Train Seeks Riders Don't miss the train. The Big Game Express Train is leaving for Stanford Stadium for the 102nd Big Game on Nov 20. The Big Game Express Train had its first run in 1997, for the 100th Big Game, and is fast becoming a Cal tradition. The train departs from Jack London Square's Amtrak station or the Hayward Amtrak station, and will go around the Bay directly to Stanford. It's a great way to celebrate with Cal fans prior to the game, and a good way to avoid the traffic jams. For information on how to order tickets, call 643-7665. Seating is limited. Nominations Needed for Service Award Cal's tradition of public service is being recognized for the first time in a major alumni award, and all Berkeley alumni living in the United States are eligible. The campus needs nominations for the new Peter E. Haas Public Service Award, which are due to the Vice Chancellor for University Relations by Dec. 1. The award recognizes personal efforts by an individual toward creative social change at the local or grassroots level. It focuses on four major areas: community service (including social service), health care, environmental work or education. The recipient will receive $20,000, and an additional $20,000 will be donated to a charity of his or her choice. It will be awarded for the first time at the next Charter Day, March 23, 2000. Input on Lower Sproul Facelift Sought Revitalizing Lower Sproul Plaza is the subject of two upcoming town hall meetings, the first on Friday, Nov. 19, at noon, in the ASUC Senate Chambers in Eshleman Hall, the second on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m., in the MLK, Jr. Student Union's Stephens Lounge. Topics to be discussed include upgrading or replacing Eshleman Hall, making the plaza more aesthetically appealing, improving area food service, renovating Chávez Center and creating a more inviting gateway to the area. The meetings are open to the public. The project is a joint effort of the ASUC and Undergraduate Affairs.
