Cards Will Free Up Space in Faculty and Staff Wallets By Travis
Hodgkins, Public Affairs By October 2000, faculty and staff can consign their quaint blue and beige employee identification cards -- and several other campus cards -- to the scrap book, and use a new multipurpose photo ID card in their place. Interest in a photo ID card for staff and faculty has been spurred by the success of the four-year old student photo ID card. Approximately 30,000 student ID cards and 1,900 pilot staff and faculty IDs -- which have a bar code and a magnetic strip in addition to a picture -- are now in circulation. Using the same high-tech features, the new card for employees will serve as a traditional ID card as well as a library card and a security (key access) card. By "rolling" several different campus cards into one multipurpose card, employees can carry fewer cards in their wallets, and the campus can achieve better security, says staff member Sarita Dixit, point person for research, analysis and outreach for the new card. She says Chancellor Berdahl is "very keen" on having the new employee ID card program up and running by this time next year. Like the student photo ID card, the new card will also provide access to Recreational Sports Facilities for members of the sports facility, and discounts to campus performances. Through a year-long staff internship, Dixit is helping to roll out the new card by collecting "little pieces" of information on existing departmental ID card programs and on photo ID programs at other UC campuses. A debit card feature -- to pay for copying and faxing and for purchases made in campus service departments -- may be added later, says Dixit. So may services involving UC Police Department and/or Parking and Transportation Services. For example, she says, there may be "a one-card approach to mass transit," similar to the student pass allowing unlimited rides on AC Transit. Progress reports on the ID card program will be presented in the near future to the Council of Deans and the Academic Senate, and a Web site on the card will be up by the end of the year.
