Bring Holiday Cheer to Those Less Fortunate

With the holidays just around the corner, generous members of the campus community are joining together to help brighten the season for those less fortunate.
Children living in foster homes, the homeless and families without enough food are just some of the under-served groups that will benefit from the efforts of various Berkeley organizations.
Following is a list of some of these projects. Staff and faculty are invited to make donations and/or volunteer time to any of these efforts.
School of Public Health
The School of Public Health is sponsoring a collection of supplies for the Suitcase Clinic, a non-profit organization run by Berkeley students and community volunteers. Among its many services, the clinic distributes clothing, food and hygiene items to homeless and low-income individuals. Donations of band-aids, razors and shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste, blankets, jackets and eyeglass frames are requested. Berkeley Staff Assembly
Donations for The Marine Corps Toy for Tots Program and the Alameda County Food Bank are sought by the Berkeley Staff Assembly. The group is asking for new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items. Last year, 775 toys and 1,398 pounds of food was collected. A list of drop-off points is posted at the group's Web site (bsa.berkeley.edu:4218/). Those interested in setting up a drop-off point should contact Dave Hernes at hernes@math.berkeley.edu or 642-9104.
Black Faculty and Staff Organization
Disadvantaged and at-risk children will attend a party in their honor from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at Alumni House. The kids will receive presents and goodie bags and enjoy entertainment, snacks and refreshments as well as a visit from Santa. Berkeley Pledge
Chancellor Berdahl, along with the mayors of Richmond, Berkeley, San Francisco and Oakland, are conducting a book drive for elementary school children served by the Berkeley Pledge. New childrens books can be dropped off at 200 California Hall or ordered online at the Berkeley Pledge Web site (www.chance.berkeley.edu/bpledge) by clicking on the links to Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. These orders can be shipped to Frances Katsuura, 200 California Hall, Berkeley, CA, 94720-1500.
Housing and Dining Services
"Adopt a Special Kid," a no-cost adoption agency in Oakland, will be the recipient of funds raised by Housing and Dining Services's annual penny drive. The money will be used to buy toys for children in the program. Donations can be made directly to the agency at "AASK America, 287 17th St., #207, Oakland, CA 94612.
Cal Corps
Cal Corps promotes and supports service efforts by students. This winter, the groups is sponsoring a book drive for five elementary schools in Berkeley. Books and/or donations can be dropped off at 505 Eshelman, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cal Corps also has referrals for a number of other agencies around the Bay Area that need assistance during the holidays. Hermanas Unidas
This student group, which provides support and awareness for Chicana/Latina women, is presenting gifts for "Families That Care," a foster home in Oakland. The group is looking for donations of new toys ($5 to $10 price range) and/or money. Drop-off boxes for checks and/or new, unwrapped toys are located in the Raza Recruitment and Retention Center in 500 Eshleman Hall. Please indicate gender and age range the toy is intended for on the package. A party for the children will be held at the center Sunday, Dec. 4, at noon. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
Young patients at Children's Hospital of Oakland will be the recipients of a toy drive being conducted by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. To raise money and collect gifts, the fraternity is sponsoring a dance, open to all, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, in Pauley Ballroom. Admission is $7 with a $2 discount for those who bring a new, unwrapped toy to the event. Those wishing to donate toys and/or money, but unable to attend the dance, should contact Damon Brown at damonb@uclink4.berkeley.edu or 547-8746.
YWCA at UC Berkeley
The YWCA at UC Berkeley and Cal student volunteers are sponsoring a Secret Santa Project, providing gifts for children with parents in prison. For information on donating gifts and/or money, call Jen Siemer at 848-6370.
