Posted May 3, 2000 Spring has come to the campus, complete with blooming flowers, long lines at book buy-back counters, and a wealth of renowned politicians, journalists and academics come to share their thoughts in commencement addresses and learned lectures. The season's calendar includes Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, presenting the keynote speech for commencement convocation at 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, in the Greek Theater. Albright, who assumed her post in 1997, is the first female secretary of state and highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. Free tickets are required for the event. Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, the Maurice Hexter Professor of Social and Economic Policy at Brandeis University, founder and editor of The American Prospect and host of several PBS specials on economics, lectures at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 9th, in Bechtel Hall's Sibley Auditorium. Reich will speak on "Wealth, Poverty and Alan Greenspan: Social Policy and Macro Economic Policy." His visit is sponsored by the School of Social Welfare. California Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante delivers the commencement speech for the Graduate School of Education Saturday, May 13 at 2 p.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium. Bustamante is the first Latino elected to statewide office in California in more than 120 years. He also served as Speaker of the State Assembly, from 1993 to 1998. Ira Glass, host and producer of award-winning national radio program "This American Life," is the commencement speaker for the Graduate School of Journalism. The event is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, May 13, in the courtyard of North Gate Hall. Glass, who has worked for National Public Radio for more than 18 years, has garnered numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious Peabody Award. Former Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dan Mote -- who left campus last year to assume the chancellorship at the University of Maryland -- returns to Berkeley to present the commencement address for the College of Engineering, at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 20 in the Greek Theatre.
