20 SEPTEMBER 00 | Former Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, who has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, is making slow, but steady improvement.

"The recovery process will take some time, but we are very encouraged," said his son, Norman Tien. Tien remains in serious but stable condition at UCSF Medical Center. No additional surgery is anticipated and a course of treatment has begun.

On behalf of the family and his father, Norman Tien said, "We definitely want to thank everyone who has sent cards and messages.

"There has been an amazing amount of support from everyone. It is very touching and really wonderful," he said. "The outpouring of support has been very helpful to our family and to my dad."

Although the 65-year-old former chancellor energies are focused on his recovery, the family has been reading him some of the cards and e-mails that have flooded in since news of his condition was released September 13. He knows how much people care, said Norman Tien.

Family members noticed over Labor Day weekend that Tien appeared extremely tired, which is uncharacteristic for him. At the urging of his daughter, Phyllis, and her husband, both of whom are physicians, Tien sought medical attention September 6. Doctors discovered that he had a brain tumor and surgery was performed. On September 7, he was transferred to UCSF Medical Center. He had been in the intensive care unit there for a week. On September 14 he was transferred to a regular room.

The family prefers that flowers not be sent to the hospital. Cards and messages may be sent to Tien's campus office, 6101 Etcheverry Hall, MC 1740.
