Campus honors those it has lost

12 September 2008

The campus held its seventh annual memorial service Tuesday, Sept. 9, at noon in a gathering west of California Hall. The service marks the passing of faculty, professors emeriti, staff, staff retirees, and undergraduate and graduate students who died during the previous 12 months.

The ceremony included a welcome and remarks from Chancellor Birgeneau, followed by a reading of names of the departed by Academic Senate Chair Mary Firestone, Staff Ombudsperson Margo Wesley, and ASUC President Roxanne Winston. Laura Pérez, associate professor of ethnic studies, read poet Alfred Arteaga’s “Aristotle,” student musicians April Paik and Diana Lee performed Schumann’s Traumeri for violin and cello, and Joanna Trammell, University House manager, sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“Amazing Grace,” played by bagpiper Jeff Campbell (above), and the release of white doves over the glade marked the end of the event.

The names of those honored are listed online.
