 Stories for April 1, 1998:

There’s Something New Under the Sun at Cal Day ’98

by La Dawn DuVall Davis, Public Affairs
posted Apr. 1, 1998

Hop on a cable car at Cal Day – Berkeley’s open house taking place Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – and see the campus as you’ve never seen it before. Cal Day has a new look this year, and the campus has a new chancellor.

At 10 a.m. visitors can hear Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl give welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony in Wheeler Auditorium.

Where else but Cal Day ’98 can visitors repel from one of the campus’s largest lecture halls; attend an authentic Native American Pow Wow; catch a first glimpse of the 1998 California Golden Bears in an inter-squad scrimmage; or take a trip back in time for an up close and personal look at a reconstructed T Rex skeleton or the remains of a 10,000-year-old mammoth?

Events are scheduled throughout the day for visitors of all ages. Listen to a carillon recital of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee”; hear a lecture on first-person writing from Adair Lara of the San Francisco Chronicle; or take an interactive treasure hunt on the World Wide Web.

Lectures and presentations by noted faculty will cover a variety of topics, ranging from the future of California to new visions for cancer therapy. Visitors can see and hear how Berkeley engineers are preparing for “the Big One” and learn invaluable tips on earthquake preparedness.

Programs designed specifically for newly admitted and prospective students will be offered by Undergraduate Admissions and Relations With Schools, the Financial Aid Office and the California Alumni Association. Housing and

Dining Services will provide regularly scheduled tours of the residence halls throughout the day. Most Cal Day ’98 activities are free or offered at special discounted admission rates.
