New Transportation Project Eases Commute Problems

Campus commuters now have a new service designed to ease transportation woes. The Berkeley TRiPmobiles are specially-converted vans created to sell public transit tickets and offer information about carpools and other transportation alternatives.

TRiPmobiles are “commute stores on wheels” which bring alternate transportation information directly to commuters at various local stops.

Started in October 1997 with funds from Caltrans, the innovative Berkeley TRiPmobile program was developed by Berkeley TRiP, the original non-profit retail “commute store” housed since 1987 on Center Street in downtown Berkeley.

Faculty, staff and students who find it hard to visit the downtown Berkeley store will find TRiPmobiles at various stops on the Berkeley campus and in West Berkeley and Emeryville. Members of New Directions, the campus alternate transportation incentive program, can now get discounts on public transit tickets at the TRiPmobiles.

Berkeley TRiP, a joint project of UC Berkeley and the City of Berkeley, administers the TRiPmobile project, handling all aspects of planning, implementation and promotion.

Caltrans awarded Berkeley TRiP the $338,000 two-year grant from I-80 Traffic Mitigation Project funds. Now that the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are completed, the TRiPmobiles will help Caltrans promote HOV lane use by distributing carpool information throughout the area.

The TRiPmobiles offer many of the same commuter services as Berkeley TRiP’s retail store, providing often hard-to-find bus schedules, maps and a wide array of transit tickets.

The TRiPmobile staff can identify the best commute plan using public transit and sell customers the corresponding tickets from the vehicle.

TRiPmobile staff are trained to provide information on the local transit agencies, carpool options, and to field unusual transportation requests.
