Incompetent Performance Policy: Comments Due May 15

A proposed addition to the University of California Academic Personnel Manual, Section 075 – detailing the conditions under which tenured faculty may be terminated for incompetent performance – is currently under review. Campus personnel are invited to submit comments by May 15.

The proposed language reaffirms current UC policy stating that incompetent performance constitutes good cause for dismissal. It also articulates standards for evaluating faculty performance and the formal process for the review of such cases.

The proposed policy addition is available in the Academic Personnel Office or online at http://www.ucop.edu/acadadv/acadpers/apm/rev-075.html.

Comments should be sent by May 15 to Patti Owen, Office of Academic Personnel, 200 California Hall or via email to APpolicy@uclink.berkeley.edu.

At LHS: Face to Fluke With Whale Robots

Robotic whales will have an exclusively Bay Area “sighting” at Lawrence Hall of Science May 17 through Aug. 30.

“Whales: Giants of the Deep” will bring visitors face to face, and face to fluke with moving, breathing and spouting life-sized models of orca or killer whale, gray whale, humpback whale, the 31-foot sperm whale and narwhal, the “unicorn of the sea.”

The exhibit also features scenes of ocean environments where whales swim, spout, spyhop and “sing,” along with interactive activities about the world’s whales.

Opening day, Sunday, May 17, will feature the “Whale of a Day” Ocean Festival, with hands-on science activities and fun related to the world’s biggest mammals.

Lawrence Hall of Science is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for children 7 to 18, seniors, and students; and $2 for children 3 to 6. Located on Centennial Dr. below Grizzly Peak Blvd., the Hall can be reached by AC Transit and the UC Berkeley shuttle.

UCOP Moves to New Headquarters

The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has a new home in downtown Oakland – just across the street from the site where UC first opened its doors 130 years ago.

Nearly a thousand UCOP employees moved into the new headquarters at 1111 Franklin St., between 11th and 12th Streets, April 25.

For the last 10 years, the Office of the President has leased space in the Kaiser Center on Lakeside Drive across from Oakland’s Lake Merritt.

The new structure, which the university is purchasing from the contractor-developer for $38.2 million, includes eight stories of office space and five levels of parking, one of them underground. It contains approximately 225,000 square feet of usable office space as well as space for retail services on the ground level.

The move represents “a significant event in the life of the University of California,” said UC President Richard C. Atkinson, “because we’ve come back to where we started.”

A bronze plaque on the corner of 13th and Franklin, near the new building, commemorates UC’s founding on March 23, 1868 on a two-square-block site donated to the state by the College of California.

The university began with 38 students and 10 faculty members. Today, it includes 170,000 students, 137,000 faculty and staff members, nine campuses and a tenth in the planning stages.

Sex Offender Data Available from UC Police

Department of Justice information on registered sex offenders in California is available on CD-ROM at the UC Police Department, located in Room 1, Sproul Hall.

California legislation passed in 1996, commonly known as “Megan’s Law,” requires that specific information about registered “high risk” and “serious” sex offenders be available to the public. This information is provided for public protection.

Data access is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Those who want to see the information must have valid identification (California driver’s license or ID card), be at least 18 years old, and provide a valid purpose for viewing the material, such as wanting to protect one’s children. Registered sex offenders are not permitted access to the data base.

For information or to make an appointment to access the data, call 642-6760. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the Oakland Police Department and many other local law enforcement agencies also provide this information.

I House Honors Goldman, Yang at Benefit Gala

International House honored Richard Goldman and Jerry Yang at a festive celebration and awards dinner Wednesday, April 29.

Goldman is the 1998 International House Alumnus of the Year, in recognition of his pioneering support of grassroots international environmental heroes through the Goldman Environmental Prize, as well as for his support and personal commitment to I House ideals.

Jerry Yang – co-founder and chief executive of Yahoo! – was named this year’s corporate world citizen. As the first and largest navigational guide to the World Wide Web, Yahoo! provides technological links between people of many cultures. Yang has also provided significant assistance to immigrants and minorities through the Asian Pacific American Community Fund.

Some 300 business, diplomatic and educational leaders as well as I House residents attended the benefit.
