Thirty-One Honored by D. Lyn Hunter, Public Affairs Helping staff balance the demands of work and home earned 31 campus supervisors Excellence in Management Awards May 4 at a standing room-only ceremony in Barrows Halls Lipman Room. Each winning manager was nominated by his or her staff. Nominations focused on a managers ability to support peak job performance while at the same time encouraging flexibility for such personal concerns as child care,elder care, community service and education. Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Carol Christ lauded the award winners at the noon-time ceremony for creating work environments that help staff juggle lifes many demands. A person should not have to choose between work or life, she said. The creativity, sympathy and listening skills of these managers have enabled their staffs to fill both roles successfully. As award winners accepted their certificates, Kathleen Valerio, chair of the Excellence in Management Committee, read excerpts from their nomination letters. Creating flexible work-schedules, providing professional development opportunities, involving staff in decision-making, encouraging volunteerism and maintaining a good sense of humor in times of stress were cited by staff as reasons these managers deserve special recognition. Managers who recognize that employees have a life outside of work are in a better position to help them maximize contributions to both work and home, said Carol Hoffman, manager of Work/Life Program Development at University Health Services and keynote speaker at the event. She added that employees who feel respected and cared for are loyal, committed and eager to give back to the workplace. The Excellence in Management Award, now in its 10th year, was created by the Berkeley Staff Assembly (BSA), a staff organization focused on issues of interest and importance to staff employees. According to La Dawn Duvall, BSA coordinator, the awards were developed to formally recognize the best managers and supervisors on campus. Employees are often the best judges of what is considered an ideal working environment. I can think of no greater honor than to have someone I supervise let me know Ive done a good job, said Duvall.
