Mote Named President of University of Maryland

posted June 10, 1998

Vice Chancellor for University Relations Dan Mote has been appointed the 27th president of the University of Maryland at College Park.

He will be here through July and take up his new duties in September, replacing William Kirwan, who will become president of Ohio State University July 1.

Mote, 61, was named vice chancellor in 1991. He has been responsible for fundraising, government relations, publications, and public information. In 1992 he launched the Campaign for a New Century to raise $1.1 billion in private support by 2000. So far the campaign has raised $765 million for Berkeley.

John Cash, associate vice chancellor for university relations, will be interim vice chancellor while a national search for Mote’s replacement proceeds.

Except for four years, Mote has been on campus since age 18. He received BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering and a PhD in engineering mechanics at Berkeley. Joining the mechanical engineering faculty in 1967, he received a Distinguished Teacher Award in 1971. Mote chaired the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1987 to 1991, where he holds an endowed chair in mechanical systems. In 1988 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

“Dan Mote has been associated with Berkeley all his life,” said Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl. “He has been an extraordinary member of the Berkeley faculty for over 30 years. He has been a central force behind the current capital campaign.”

At a meeting with the entire staff of University Relations June 3, Mote said, “I would not have been considered in Maryland without you. Your good work put UC Berkeley at the top of the pile.”

He went on to say that “not many people at my age get the opportunity to grow and be enriched. . . . Life’s adventures are very important. . . . I expect to be back here eventually, but for now, as long as I can be effective, I’ll be at College Park.”
