Come to Staff Appreciation Festival June 15 by D. Lyn Hunter, Public Affairs Groove to the sounds of a 20-piece steel drum band, relax with a soothing massage or munch on tasty treats at Summerfest, a free, outdoor festival for staff employees, Monday, June 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. Summerfest provides a bear pause for hardworking staff to take a break, relax with co-workers and be appreciated for their contributions to the campus, said Mark Gotvald, an advisor in the College of Letters and Science and chair of Summerfest 1998. Summerfest, which began as Staff Appreciation Day in 1986, takes place at the base of the Campanile. The Chancellor will grant two hours of administrative leave for staff to attend. All staff are eligible for prizes donated by campus departments and local merchants. A one-year central parking pass is one of the most coveted, according to Gotvald. Other prizes include restaurant gift certificates, hotel get-away packages and a bicycle. Summerfest includes bingo and carnival games, a massage booth and information tables as well as arts and crafts exhibits. Hot dogs, black bean wraps, brownies, fresh fruit, ice cream sandwiches, popsicles, soda, bottled water and popcorn are just some of the free refreshments available during the event. The Chabot Panhandlers, this years featured band, bring a touch of the tropics to Summerfest with Caribbean-style music. Several members of the band are also Berkeley staffers. Gotvald said volunteers are needed for set-up, games, food service and clean up.
