College and university faculty, professionals and independent scholars can apply for lecture or advance research grants in nearly 130 countries. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship and a PhD or comparable professional qualifications. For lecturing awards, university or college teaching experience is expected. Most lecturing assignments are in English. Awards range from two months to a full academic year. Deadlines for two special programs, the distinguished Fulbright Chairs in Western Europe and Canada and Fulbright seminars for international education and academic administrators, are May 1 and Nov. 1, respectively. California Biological Control Conference More than 100 scientists, government officials and industry professionals are on campus until June 11 discussing biological control of undesirable insects, nematodes, vertebrates and other creatures. Organized by the UC Center for Pest Management Research and Extension, this first California Conference on Biological Control aims to foster cross fertilization of ideas in the field of biological control. The conference’s focus is on the release of organisms to control agricultural and urban pests. Additional themes include biological control regulation, prevention of frost damage to crops, and California industry perspectives on biological control. July 4 Fireworks Cruise To Benefit LHS July 4 Fireworks CruiseTo Benefit LHS Advance tickets are available for a 4th of July fireworks cruise to benefit the Lawrence Hall of Science. Cruise the Bay, picnic on board, enjoy the fireworks and sail back to Oakland’s Jack London Square under the stars. Tickets are $40 each (discounts available for LHS members) and available only in advance. For information call 642-5134. Feedback Sought on UC Medical Plans UC Benefits is reviewing its medical plans and invites faculty, staff and retirees to help with the review by answering a brief survey. The survey, designed to solicit opinions and concerns about UC Benefits medical plans, is available on the web through the end of August at www.ucop.edu/bencom. All responses are anonymous. Kaiser Offers New Member Orientation Beginning June 17, Kaiser Permanente will offer new member orientation sessions, giving an overview on Kaiser care, medical advice and other services. The sessions will take place at 1:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in Room 256 University Hall, and will last about one hour. The sessions will include information on how to schedule appointments, fill prescriptions and use emergency services.
