1998-99 Staff Pay Plans Proposed

Chancellor Berdahl has approved a merit increase fund of up to 3.5 percent for staff members in the Manager and Senior Professional (MSP) and Professional and Support Staff (PSS) merit-based pay plans. Under the proposal, merit increases would be effective Oct. 1, 1998, which means the increases would appear in the Nov. 1 paychecks.

Merit-based pay plans

Employees appointed to positions in the merit-based pay plans (MSP and most PSS positions) by July 1, 1998, are eligible for the merit increases. (Salary program changes for employees covered by collective bargaining will be described in separate communications.)

The amount of an employee's merit increase depends on that person's performance, as it relates to the person's current pay and responsibilities, as well as other factors such as the person's performance in relation to other members of the unit.

Campus control units have received detailed guidelines for administering the merit increase program.

Salary grades adjusted

The 1998-99 salary plan proposal includes a 2 percent adjustment of the salary grade structure for MSP and PSS positions, as well as for Programmer/Analyst and Computer Resources Manager titles.

A change in the grade structure does not result in automatic salary increases. The adjustment means that the range for a group of titles moves upward, and an individual salary would change only as a result of this adjustment if the salary fell below the new minimum of the range.

Step-based salary plans

For employees in step-based salary plans who are not covered by collective bargaining, the 1998-99 pay program includes a 2 percent general increase (sometimes called a range adjustment), effective Oct. 1. Merit increases for these employees will be funded on the same schedule as applied in 1997-98. Further information will be available in time for the Jan. 1, 1999 merit review date (delayed from July 1, 1998).

Employees who are unsure which pay plan or category their jobs fit into, or wish more information about the 1998-99 staff pay plans, should check with their supervisors.
