Women's Faculty Club Beckons By Julia Sommer, Public
Affairs The name "Women's Faculty Club" could be misleading. The beautiful three-story shingled building set in a lush garden just west of the Haas School of Business has welcomed faculty and staff of either gender since the early 1970s. "The membership price is very reasonable," says manager Mary Remy, "a one-time $25 entrance fee and $10 a month. For that you get to eat in the lovely dining room with outdoor terrace (many claim the food here is the best on campus), relax in the historic lounge and library, book the facility for gatherings and take part in special events for members and their guests." Built by John Galen Howard in 1923 as a haven for women excluded from the Men's Faculty Club (now the Faculty Club), the Women's Faculty Club is a genteel oasis in a busy, crowded campus. Complimentary fall events for members and their guests include a sherry reception Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and a light breakfast Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 7 to 9 a.m., both in the lounge. On Oct. 28 members and guests can enjoy a traditional, three-course afternoon tea with piano accompaniment from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. ($10). The club's monthly Lunch & Learn lecture series kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 15, with three speakers from the law school's new International Human Rights Law Center discussing their projects, including legal representation for refugees seeking asylum in the U.S. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the lecture at 12:30 p.m. The series continues on Oct. 13 with a talk by Mary Ann Mason, professor of social welfare, on "A Voice for the Child: The Case for Custody." On Nov. 10 Paola Timiras, professor emerita of molecular and cell biology, speaks on "Successful Aging." A new members lunch (free to new members) is offered on Nov. 4, a champagne holiday luncheon on Dec. 11 ($16), and a holiday dinner buffet on Dec. 18 ($10/$15). For those on official UC business, the Women's Faculty Club provides guest rooms with private bath. Rates, including breakfast, range from $68 to $95. For information about the club, phone 845-5084.
