New Directions for Scholarly Publishing posted October 28, 1998 The high cost of printing and publishing scholarly documents constantly challenges scientists and academics. The Internet and other forms of electronic publishing pose attractive alternatives, but electronic publishing raises new issues. On Friday, Nov. 6, publishers, academic librarians and scholars will gather to discuss such issues at "Alternative Models for Scholarly Publishing." The 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. conference takes place at the Krutch Theater, Clark Kerr Campus, 601 Warring Street, Berkeley. "Publishing information is getting more and more expensive," says Jeanne Fong of the Librarians' Association of UC Berkeley and chair of the conference planning committee. "Because of the new economic realities facing universities, people involved in academic publishing need to create new paradigms for scholarly publishing and communication." Speakers will discuss issues of ownership and control of documents posted on the Internet, as well as the nature of Internet publishing venues. The conference cost is $65 in advance, $75 at the door and $25 for UC faculty, staff and students with identification. UC President Richard Atkinson will deliver the opening address.
