It's Open Enrollment Time Again

by Marie Johnson, Human Resources
posted November 11, 1998

Campus open enrollment -- when employees can enroll in, or de-enroll from UC sponsored medical, dental and vision plans, as well as change participation in the Dependent Care Assistance Program (DepCare) and the Tax Savings on Insurance Premiums (TIP) program began Nov. 2 and ends Nov. 23.

Open enrollment is also when employees can choose a different medical or dental plan, or add eligible family members to current plans.

The 1998 Open Enrollment Statement, showing an employee's current health and insurance enrollments, and the Open Enrollment 1998 booklet, giving an overview of 1999 benefits changes along with instructions for using the Open Enrollment Action Line, were mailed to home addresses beginning Oct. 19.

Employees who did not receive the packet can call 642-7053 to request a copy.

Benefits Fair

The Open Enrollment Benefits Fair will be Wednesday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Alumni House. Healthcare plan representatives and benefits office staff will be on hand to answer questions. A limited supply of plan materials will be available.

Highlights of this year's open enrollment include:

• All UC-sponsored medical and dental plans will be open for enrollment or transfer.

• The Legal Expense Plan will not be open during open enrollment. 1999 rates will decrease slightly.

• There are minor changes in medical plans, which are detailed on pages 14 and 15 of the 1998 Open Enrollment booklet.

• For 1999, UC's monthly contribution to the medical plan cost remains set so that at least one HMO plan is provided at no cost to the employee. UC will pay the entire cost of the dental and vision plan premiums. This year, there will be no monthly cost for Kaiser or PacifiCare; Health Net will have a small monthly charge; UC Care will continue with only a slight increase in the employee monthly charge. The employee monthly cost for Prudential High Option Plan will increase again.

• There are no rate or plan changes to Employee-Paid Life, Basic or Expanded Dependent Life, Employee-Paid Disability, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D).

• Open Enrollment is the only time changes can be made in the Dependent Care Assistance Program (DepCare) and the Tax Savings on Insurance Premiums (TIP) program unless there is an eligible change in family or employment status.

Additional benefits information is available through your department benefits counselor, UC's automated telephone service, bencom.fone, (800) 888-8267, and on OP's benefits web page at www.ucop.edu/bencom.

The Human Resources Benefits Web page at hrweb.berkeley.edu/hrbenies.htm also has details about this year's open enrollment changes.

Medical plan numbers are as follows: Health Net (800) 640-2004; Kaiser (800) 464-4000; PacifiCare (800) 982-9993; UC Care (800) 313-3804.
