Boalt Hall Hosts Two Conferences on Global Ocean Issues posted November 18, 1998 The last Friday and Saturday in October saw Boalt Hall hosting an international symposium on "The Law of the Sea." Scholars from Asia, Europe and North America presented their research on themes that covered a range of subjects. Yet, all papers were concerned with the endangerment of future global ocean resources due to environmental problems, fishery depletion, and slow progress in the design and implementation of international agreements concerning such problems. Organized by Harry Scheiber, Riesenfeld Professor of Law and History and also associate dean of law, the symposium brought together more than 40 of the leading figures in ocean law and policy studies, including: Ronald Barston of Cardiff University, Wales; David Bederman of Emory University; William Burke of the University of Washington; Ana Maria Ferreira of Lisbon, Portugal; Benedict Kingsbury of New York University; Jean-Pierre Ple of the U.S. Department of State; Tullio Treves, a member of the UN Tribunal on the Law of the Sea and also a professor of law in Milan University, Italy; David Vanderzwaag of Dalhousie University, Canada; and John Van Dyke, professor of law at the University of Hawaii. Boalt also hosted the annual meeting of the Ocean Governance Study Group on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. the Ocean Governance Study Group is a national consortium of scholars in marine law and policy, co-directed by faculty of Boalt Hall's ocean law and policy program.
