Patrick Kirch

Professor of Anthropology Patrick Kirch has been appointed director of the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum of Anthropology. In this new role, Kirch will focus on using the Internet to make the museum's intellectual riches available to schools and the public, as well as continuing the museum's exhibit program.

Ian Carmichael

Professor of geology Ian Carmichael has been elected a fellow of The Royal Society in London. Election to The Royal Society, which serves as the UK's academy of science, is recognized as a "sign of highest regard in science."

William Kahan

Computer science Professor William Kahan received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Emanuel R. Piore Award for "contributions to numerical analysis and standardization of floating-point arithmetic."

The Piore Award is one of the prestigious 2000 IEEE Technical Field Awards, whose 15 recipients were announced in June.

Kahan, a faculty member since 1968, is a past recipient of the A. M. Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery, which is sometimes referred to as a Nobel Prize for computer science.
