Student Group Presents Free Music and Cheap Films

Posted September 1, 1999

SUPERB, Berkeley's student production group, presents an exciting fall line-up of films and concerts, all happening right here on campus.

See some of this year's top studio films at bargain prices, Friday nights at Wheeler Auditorium. At $3 for students and $4 for others, tickets are nearly half the price charged at most cineplexes.

Upcoming screenings include "Election," starring Matthew Broderick as a popular teacher and Reese Witherspoon as an ambitious candidate for student-body president in a satirical comedy on ambition, morality, desire, love and deceit. The film will be shown at 7 and 9:15 p.m., Sept. 10.

Check out all the familiar Berkeley campus sights in the classic film "The Graduate," which includes shots of Sproul Plaza, Telegraph Ave., Unit One residence hall and the ivy-covered Theta Delta Chi fraternity house. The movie, at 7 and 9:30 p.m., Sept. 24, stars Dustin Hoffman as a recent college grad who romances a close family friend old enough to be his mother, but eventually falls in love with her daughter.

Also on tap for the season is "The Spy Who Shagged Me," sequel to the English spy spoof Austin Powers; the low-budget fright phenomena "The Blair Witch Project;" and the epic "Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace."

SUPERB is also sponsoring a series of free Friday noon-time concerts in Lower Sproul Plaza throughout the semester. Hear the sounds of Bitesize on Sept. 10, 10 cents on Sept. 17, Little Tin Frog on Sept. 24 and Loaf on Oct. 15.

Visit SUPERB's Web site at www.OCF. Berkeley.EDU/~superb/ for a complete schedule of films and concerts, or call 642-7511.
