Awards Posted February 9, 2000 Stuart Russell Stuart Russell, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, was named one of "15 people reinventing how we live" in San Francisco magazine's January 2000 issue.
The article -- featuring innovators who will shape how people live, think, work, and play -- named Russell for his "BATmobile," a car that could help solve traffic problems and make driving safer and easier. The BAT stands for Bayesian automated taxi, named for probability theorist Reverend Thomas Bayes. The vehicle uses a computer to sense all aspects of road travel, adjusting the steering, braking and acceleration accordingly. Professors Stephen Derenzo and Costas Spanos, electrical engineering and computer sciences, were both named Fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for 2000.
Derenzo was honored for "contributions to the development of high resolution positron tomography and the discovery of new scintillators," and Spanos for "contributions and leadership in semiconductor manufacturing." Fellows are elected based on their outstanding contributions to the electrical and electronics engineering profession.
Boris Rubinsky, professor of mechanical engineering, was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers. Rubinsky will be inducted as a fellow at the annual meeting in Washington, D.C. in March. The institute is a professional organization representing medical and biological engineering. Chang-Lin Tien, University Professor, former chancellor, and professor of mechanical engineering, has been named to receive the Madison Medal from Princeton University. The medal honors a graduate alumnus (Tien received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Princeton in 1959) who has had a distinguished career, advanced the cause of education, or achieved an outstanding record of public service. The award is named for Princeton's first graduate student, fourth president of the United States James Madison. Tien will receive the award Feb. 26 in New Jersey.
