Campus Seeks Faculty Director for Professional Development Program

Posted February 9, 2000

The Professional Development Program promotes the academic success of all students, particularly those from segments of society with sustained educational disadvantage. The program works closely with professors, teachers, graduate students and academic support program staff to ensure that students maximize their academic achievement. The faculty director will take a leading role in promoting academic achievement through increased educational opportunities for traditionally underrepresented students, by conducting original research, evaluating existing programs and creating new initiatives to increase educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Through strong intellectual vision and leadership, the faculty director will enhance the program's reputation and role on campus. The director will identify, develop and implement initiatives related to the program's long-term goals. As a liaison to faculty, deans and campus administrative officers, the director will assist the program in forming collaborations with campus units with similar goals.

The director will have a major role in developing public and private funding initiatives in support of the program's new and existing programs.

Candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • experience and/or interest in department -- and school-based intervention programs that promote the success of underrepresented students;

  • ability to identify and secure funding from private and public foundations and granting agencies;

  • project management experience, including strategic planning, budgeting and team leadership;

  • sensitivity and interpersonal skills to interact well and maintain professional relations with diverse audiences, including administrative leadership, K-12 teachers, faculty, staff, students and public/private partners.

This position is open only to Berkeley faculty members. Appointment will be up to 50 percent for three years with a negotiable starting date.

Interested applicants are invited to send a curriculum vitae and letter to the chairman of the Faculty Director Search Subcommittee, Special Scholarships Committee, c/o Academic Senate, 320 Stephens Hall. Applications must be received by Friday, March 17. Nominations are also welcome.
