June 12 reception kicks off AIDS Memorial fund raising
A Monday, June 12 reception will kick-off the fund-raising campaign for Berkeley's AIDS Memorial. The event begins at 4 p.m. in the Doe Library Morrison Room. Patricia Rhee, winner of the national competition for designing the memorial, will be on hand during the festivities. Guests may view her design, along with all competition entries, during the reception in the adjacent Bernice Layne Brown Gallery.
The display also includes stories and memorabilia from campus staff who have died from AIDS.
Approximately $100,000 must be raised to construct the memorial -- a Japanese landscape-inspired design that incorporates a ghost wall, meditation path and pool, and a stone skylight. The structure will be built in Doe Library's north lightwell.

New staff affirmative action goals effective July 1
The new campus staff affirmative action plan, effective July 1, 2000, will be available online at (hrweb.berkeley.edu/aaeeo/aaplan.htm). The "2000-2001 Affirmative Action Placement Goals for Campus and Control Units" chart will be available on the web beginning July 1 at hrweb.berkeley.edu/aaeeo/aagoals.htm and in hard copy in the August issue of SuperVision.

Join the UC team for July 15 AIDS Walk SF
Spearheaded by honorary chairwoman Peg Berdahl, the campus is organizing its participation in the UC team for the 14th Annual AIDS Walk San Francisco, Sunday, July 16, in Golden Gate Park.
The UC team will include Berkeley, UCSF and Office of the President. Last year, the team include more than 500 and contributed $40,584 to the total --placing UC eighth among more than 800 teams participating.
There are three ways to register for the walk (in each case be sure to give the UC Berkeley team number, 0087):
• Online: Visit the official AIDS Walk website at (www.aidswalk.net/aidswalksf/index.html).
• By phone: Call the AIDS Walk office at (415) 392-9255.
• By mail: Pick up a registration card at one of 30 waiting rooms and lobbies across campus (look for the AIDS Walk display stands).
Registrants will be sent a sponsor form and additional information. Anyone who raises $25 or more will receive a free Berkeley tote bag via campus mail after the event.

Tickets on sale for LHS 4th of July bay cruise
Lawrence Hall of Science will celebrate the final Independence Day of the millennium with a 4th of July Bay Cruise, leaving Oakland's Jack London Square promptly at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine.
The event includes a leisurely cruise at dusk, a picnic (bring your own), family entertainment and a one-of-a-kind view of Bay Area fireworks, with a return to shore at 10:45 p.m.
Alcohol is not permitted. Assorted beverages and light snacks may be purchased on board. Proceeds benefit LHS programs.

Call for UC Retirement Plan advisory board candidates
Employees who are active members of the UC Retirement Plan but not members of the Academic Senate are invited to run for election to the University of California Retirement System Advisory Board. Non-Academic Senate members of the plan will vote in September to fill one vacancy on the board. The term of the elected candidate will be Oct.1, 2000 through June 30, 2004.
Interested candidates must submit a brief biographical statement and a petition signed by at least 50 active members who are not Academic Senate members. Nomination packets are now available from the campus Benefits Office. UC HR/Benefits must receive completed nomination packets by Friday, July 14, 2000.
The board serves in an advisory capacity to the president of the university on matters concerning the plans -- the retirement plan, the Defined Contribution Plan and the Tax-Deferred 403(b) Plan. These planshold assets of over $44 billion and represent the retirement interests of all members and participants of the plans.
The nine-member board meets four times a year in Oakland. Members serve without compensation For information, e-mail (dswanson@uclink4.berkeley.edu).
Campus contingent to join San Francisco Pride Parade
Members of the campus community -- including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender staff, faculty, partners and families -- are invited to march with the UC Berkeley contingent in San Francisco's 30th Annual Pride Parade, Sunday, June 25.
The front of the march is scheduled to leave Market and Beale streets, near the Embarcadero, at 10:30 a.m. The Berkeley contingent (number 62) will leave from Assembly area H, on Beale Street between Mission and Howard, at approximately 11:30 a.m. The parade is televised live on WB-20 television. Work-Study Program deadlines announced
Now is the time to wind down the 1999-2000 work-study program and consider work-study hiring needs for summer 2000 and the 2000-2001 academic year.
Students with remaining 1999-2000 work-study eligibility could work until May 20. After this date, the department was responsible for 100 percent of any additional student payroll.
The department is also responsible for the full salary if the student is allowed to work between the end of the spring semester (May 20) and the beginning of the new work-study program year (June 1).
Students with valid 2000-2001 work-study awards may begin work June 1 and continue through May 18, 2001. After completing the job request and referral process, students may be employed throughout the year so long as they have work-study eligibility. A work-study student may not begin working until the office has received a signed referral form from the Work-Study Office.
