Order of the Golden Bear Lives On posted October 14, 1998 Membership in the Order of the Golden Bear is for life. There are currently about 1,000 members, including some 250 locally. Chancellor Berdahl joined the Order last month at the semi-annual initiation banquet. Members include many distinguished alumni. The Order's purpose remains much as it was a century ago, says member Steve Finacom: to bring people dedicated to the university together to discuss issues important to the university. A recent meeting discussed the David Cash dilemma. There are only three rules for meetings, says Finacom: frankness, tolerance and confidentiality. All titles are left at the door so that members can discuss matters on equal terms. Current students and the alumni secretary lead the Order. To join, one must be nominated by at least three members based on service to the University. Faculty and staff are also eligible. Current leader, or warden, is senior Mark Davis. "The
Order is a unique way to learn about the University," he
says. "It's one of the few places on campus where every
opinion carries the same weight. While you may not be in a
position to effect change, you can influence people who
can."
