Weekend of Festivities Set for Sept.23-26

Posted September 15, 1999

The campus population is expected to increase by about 4,000 as visitors from around the country attend Cal's Homecoming, Reunion & Family Weekend Sept. 23-26.

Kicking off the weekend festivities will be a rally in the new Walter A. Haas Jr. Pavilion. The rally will mark the official public opening of the complex -- a two-year, $48-million reconstruction of Harmon Gym. The arena's seating capacity has more than doubled from 6,000 to 12,100, and its ceiling height will extend to almost 100 feet. Open to all members of the Cal community, the rally will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, and will include performances by the Cal Marching Band and the Cal Jazz Choir (with Oski cheering everyone on). Admission is free.

Immediately preceding the rally, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the pavilion, basketball season tickets will go on sale for the first time to the public.

Homecoming weekend will also feature faculty seminars taught by some of Cal's most distinguished professors. Topics include art history, chemistry and education reform. On Saturday, a BBQ lunch precedes the football game against Arizona State. Throughout the weekend, registered participants can gain free admission to campus museums, tours and open houses.

In the past, Homecoming was held separately from class reunions and from family weekend. But for the second year in a row, all three will be combined to offer more program options for attendees.

Alumni from the classes of '44, '49, '54, '59, '64, '69, '74, '79, '84, '89 and '94 will hold special reunion festivities throughout the weekend. In addition, numerous colleges, schools, student groups and campus organizations are hosting events for their alumni.

Cal students, parents and families are invited to attend a reception at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union on Friday evening before the rally, along with a guided campus tour on Saturday. Special seating for families will also be available at both the BBQ lunch and football game on Saturday afternoon.
