Awards Posted November 3, 1999 Reception Will Honor Distinguished Librarians Phyllis Bischof and Kathleen Vanden Heuvel The Berkeley division of the Librarians Association of the University of California recently selected its 1999 distinguished librarians. They are Phyllis Bischof, librarian for African and African-American collections, and Kathleen Vanden Heuvel, deputy director of the law library. The two will be honored at a reception to be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Morrison Library. In a letter of nomination for the award, the dean of the Center for African Studies, Gillian Hart, cited Bischof's "absolutely central role in propelling African Studies at Berkeley to national and international prominence." Another wrote: "Her understanding of the field of African bibliography, her extensive collegial networks, her intimate knowledge of the Berkeley Africana collection, her enthusiasm for scholarship and the program and her deep caring about people are certainly priceless." "I personally would be toast without her," another colleague said. Vanden Heuvel was nominated by the Law School. "It is Kathleen's courage and intellectual integrity that stand out the most," wrote Law School Dean Herma Hill Kay. "She is a person of the highest principles." "In the end," commented Law Professor Bob Berring, "what Kathleen really brings to librarianship is her own qualities of professionalism. Kathleen is both very smart and very kind." William Kahan Computer Science Professor William Kahan received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Emanuel R. Piore Award for "contributions to numerical analysis and standardization of floating-point arithmetic."
