Cyber Exhibit Explores Perceptions of Time and Identity Posted November 3, 1999 A unique online exhibit featuring photographs taken by 24 Cal students over a 24-hour period is currently on display at the Berkeley Art Museum's website, at www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/exhibits/24h00. Conceived by French artist Valéry Grancher, "24h00" is intended to explore perceptions of identity and time. The photographers took snapshots of themselves or others each hour and assigned a single word to describe the subject's feeling at the time. Users logging on to the website can choose to view photographs by hour or by photographer by clicking on a grid, with the sequence determined by the viewer. Using this method, Grancher says that both the photographer and visitor to the website will be able to "create" the artwork and the possible narratives or scenarios they evoke. Posted online through Jan. 31, 2000, the exhibit is part of the "Côte Ouest: A Season of French Contemporary Art," a series of exhibitions of contemporary French art to be held in seven cities on the West Coast.
