Design Competition for Campus AIDS Memorial is Under Way Posted January 19, 2000 A competition for the design of a campus AIDS memorial, to be constructed in the north light court in the Doe Library, is currently under way. Individuals and teams are eligible, and UC affiliation is not required. The winner will be awarded $1,000, with two additional prizes of $200 and $300. The estimated cost of the project is $50,000. With the winning design, The Berkeley AIDS Memorial Committee is hoping to create a kind of "meditative place" to honor students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends who have died of AIDS. The design may incorporate living plants, benches, and running water and should be respectful of the classical, Beaux Arts architecture of its surroundings. Registration is required to enter the competition. Those interested can mail or fax their name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and fax number to: AIDS Memorial Design Competition, 101 Doe Library, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720. The fax number is 642-6699. Registrants can begin designing upon receipt of their competition packets, which will be mailed Feb. 25. The packets include a program, rules, site photographs, measurements and drawings. This information will also be posted on the website after this date. The deadline for submission of entries is March 24. Winners will be announced April 7. Participants can check the Web site for updates throughout the competition.
